About me:
I am Michael Yates, a specialist academic tutor supporting students preparing for the 11+, 13+, GCSEs, A-Levels and university applications. A History graduate of the University of Oxford, I began my career teaching History at City of London School before moving into specialist one-to-one tuition. Alongside my independent practice, I have also worked with leading London educational consultancies, including Bonas MacFarlane and Figtree Learning, supporting students across school admissions, public examinations and university applications.
My teaching is built around a simple philosophy: students achieve their greatest success when they learn not only what to think, but how to think. I encourage every student to read critically and write with clarity and precision. These skills underpin academic success and continue to benefit students long after their formal education.
Every lesson is carefully tailored to the individual, recognising that no two students learn in the same way. Whether a student is preparing for school entrance exams, public exams or university applications, my aim is to provide rigorous academic guidance within a supportive environment that develops confidence, independence and a genuine enjoyment of learning.
