Mike has been an amazing tutor and has put so much effort into teaching me. He brings in everything I need to learn, and I can feel the difference in my English skills! He’s fun, professional and friendly. I went from not understanding what my schoolteacher was talking about to having more knowledge than the pupils in the year above me. I’m so happy with all I’ve learnt and have gotten into all my aimed schools. Westminster, St Paul’s, City of London and UCS are all the schools he’s helped me get into. Michael tutored me in English for Common Entrance and the Winchester entrance exam. I had weekly online lessons with him for two years. Being mildly dyslexic and finding extended writing difficult, I lacked confidence in English. Michael really helped to change this. He taught me excellent exam technique and gave me a clear, simple and effective structure for persuasive writing, which made a huge difference. With his help, I went from achieving around 48% in English assessments to 75%. Michael’s lessons combined camaraderie, hard work and stimulating discussion. He made the lessons enjoyable while always pushing me to improve and achieve more. He gave me much more confidence in my English and writing, and I am extremely grateful for all his help.

GCSE and A Level

Michael helped me with both English and History during year 11 for my GCSEs. I found the lessons very helpful overall. Both through planning exactly what I would be learning (through structuring the content into clear yet detailed essay plans) but also how I would be learning it- so in a more practical planning of deadlines- I found these lessons very helpful. History was a very difficult subject to tackle and Michael’s help was integral for my improvement over the year. Similarly for English, these lessons helped me to strengthen both my knowledge of the texts studied at school but also to really compound my technique and make sure I answered the question correctly. Overall, the lessons were enjoyable as well, we had intellectual conversations which covered topics that spanned past ones just in my syllabus- such as broader politics from today and how they related back to what we were studying. Indeed, I believe what strengthened my connection with history the subject the most was the comparisons and parallels I got to make with today’s world- which these lessons played a key part to help me understand.

University Admissions

I had the pleasure of having Michael as my history tutor and I cannot recommend him highly enough. His guidance was instrumental in writing my history essay for my Cambridge Written Work submission, for which I got an A*. Michael is not only a great teacher but also challenges conventional thinking, steering me away from the "few men create history" theory towards a deeper understanding of the Treaty of Versailles creating structural weakness in the post-war order as the main cause of WWII. His lessons were engaging and enjoyable, often including discussions on England’s dreadful performance in the World Cup. What sets him apart is his unwavering support; he was always there to help. Thanks to Michael, not only did I write a great essay, but more importantly I also had a fantastic time doing so.
